Valerian Root Essential Oil produced by steam distillation of the cut and dried Valerian Root. Also known as Tagara in Ayurveda. Blends with Lavender, Patchouli or Vetivert to mask its musky smell. Valerian is a warming, sedative herb with bitter principles. Use in a vaporiser by the bed or put a few drops on a tissue. Valerian Wallichi is used inperfumery to create a musky woody character and in flavour applications, especially Tobacco.
Reserachers have pinpointed the sesquiterpenes, Valerenic acid and Valerone as the active constituents that exert a calming and restorative effect on the central nervous system. Not to be confused with Valeriana officinalis which is specific to China.
