Buchu leaf oil is a clear yellow oil with a potent herbal aroma, derived from the leaves of the buchu plant (Agathosma betulina, formerly Barosma betulina). These leaves have many pockets secreting the essential oil. These pockets form translucent dots on the limb when the leaves are viewed in the light.
Buchu is an evergreen shrub in the same family (Rutaceae) as citrus plants orange, lemon, grapefruit and lime. Buchu fragrance has green-fruity notes, and is often described as being similar to blackcurrant.
