Petitgrain Mandarin oil has a sweet, tangy, right aroma, extracted from leaves of the Mandarin tree via steam distillation process.
It is fantastic for diffusing to calm emotions, anxiety, relieve stress and elevate mood. It could become your ‘go-to’ oil for insomnia.
It contains a specific ester which is rarely found and has a powerful sedative effect.
In such cases create a blend of petitgrain mandarin with a couple of drops of spikenard and some lavender and massage the lower back and abdomen with it and diffuse the oil in the room too.
This wonderful oil calms irritation (both of the emotions and of the skin) and helps against anxiety.
* Presence of dimethyl anthranilate in the oil leads to potential of photosensitizing and thus consultation is needed before use.

The essence of Petitgrain Mandarinier oil is unique. It is very different, in aroma, from the petitgrain of other citrus plants. Instead of fresh, leafy, and citrous, the odor emitted by this petitgrain is musty, leathery, and grape-like, characteristic of dimethyl anthranilate, the major constituent of this essential oil (EO).
Dimethyl anthranilate, or methyl n-methylanthranilate, constitutes about half of Petitgrain Mandarinier EO *. The compound is a derivative of anthranilic acid, which has been designated as a controlled substance for being a precursor of an illicit euphoric sedative.
Although there is no scientific evidence that dimethyl anthranilate is sedative, I find this petitgrain EO very sedative. I fall asleep much faster with passively diffused EO of Petitgrain Mandarinier than EO of Wild Highland Lavender.
